Apprenticeship

In 2023, Old Growth Tree Service debuted its Arborist Apprenticeship Program, which provides successful candidates with the opportunity to develop valuable skills, build knowledge, and gain experience in arboriculture through paid, on-the-job training. This apprenticeship is a nationally-recognized training and education program, approved by the U.S. Department of Labor and developed in conjunction with the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). Over the course of the apprenticeship, an individual completes a combination of on-the-job training under the supervision of a mentor, self-study, and professional development to earn a Arborist Journeyworker certificate from the US Department of Labor. Successful completion of this program is rewarded with a wage increase.

The apprenticeship is a competency-based program consisting of 1-2 days each month of 1:1 work between the apprentice and their mentor that is paid and designed to provide the apprentice with the opportunity to learn and demonstrate specific competencies. Credit will be given for competencies already mastered/demonstrated by the apprentice. In addition, the apprenticeship also requires approximately 430 hours of related, unpaid, self-study completed by the apprentice on their own time following a prescribed apprenticeship curriculum developed by TCIA.
